Career development is more than just deciding on a which major to take and what job you want to get when you graduate. It is an ongoing activity, meaning that throughout your lifespan, your interest, likes, dislikes will change, situations around you will change, and you will continually have to make decisions relating to your career and job. The goal of Career Counseling is to not only help you make the decisions will be beneficial for you in present time but to make you aware of your strength, weakness, skills, etc that will be useful for future career and life decisions.

WHAT DOES A CAREER ADVISOR DO?

As a career adviser you will provide advice, guidance and required information to help students, working professions, etc. to  make realistic choices about their education, work and training. You will have to deal with a range of people, from school children over the age of 13 up to adults who may want a career change or need help with further training.

Some of the responsibility of a Career advisor involves-

  • research various career options and support organizations to meet people's needs.
  • identify skills gaps and find ways how to deal with them
  • interview individuals or  small groups to discuss career or education options
  • organise small group sessions or larger presentations on all aspects of careers work and topics related to personal development
  • use computer-aided guidance packages, skills assessment tools, psychometric test and personal inventories
  • be updated with recent professional and academic developments, change in policies etc.
  • help young people to draw their action plans for education, employment and training and support them to achieve these goals.

SCOPE-

With expanding study avenues and career opportunities, there is also a need for professional advice to help pick them the right path. With spreading awareness and acceptance of beat careers and sectors like sound engineering, social media, tourism, biotechnology trending on the career charts. In such a wide range This has lead to career counseling as one of the top professions, among teachers and educators. It is boosted by the fact that most national and international curricula have mandated schools and colleges to have at least one career counselor for their students. The scope of career counselor is not limited to schools and colleges, many business organizations also here counselors/advisors for better productivity of their employees. 

                                     According to a survey, there are only 500 counselors for about 1.5 million students in India, Compared to the U.S. which has about 2.6 million counselors for 1,80,000 students. There are more than 20,000 jobs out there because employers are searching for counselors both inside and outside of schools.

SKILLS REQUIRED-

While looking for a job, we search about the responsibilities, scope, qualification, etc required for a particular. But we often forget the most important factors i.e career interest, aptitude, and personality, needed to be considered, while applying for a job.

  • A verbal penetration ability means to have a good level of vocabulary to understand fine distinctions between different concepts.

                   Passive-

  • As you it not easy to deal with a confused student, they thousands of queries and change their minds very frequently, so to survive in this industry, you must be someone who is accommodating and not easily annoyed.

 

  •  One must have an empathetic, non-judgmental and ethical approach.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATION-

There is no specific educational qualification necessary to be a career advisor. An individual from any stream can enter this field. However, a person having a related certification and experience in related areas like psychology, human resource management, career counseling will have an edge over others during interview selection and promotions.
