Oceanographer
Oceanographers study the seas, its coastline, estuaries, coastal waters, shelves and the ocean bed. The study is used for preparation of maps, charts and graphs as well as research and development activities in all branches of ocean science for use in subsequent technology development. Oceanographers conduct surveys for locating nonliving and living resources, for preservation, conservation and protection of the environment and marine resources and for exploration and scientific work.
Oceanographer
• Apply the knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geophysics and the application of mathematics, engineering science as well as use computers for their work
• Collect and study data of ocean waters through waves, currents, and tides; marine life, mineral and oil deposits in the ocean bed, as well as the contours of the ocean bed
• Prepare maps, charts and graphs based on the compiled data
• Work on the sea to collect data and record scientific evidence and use a variety of highly technical devices for underwater work. Some of the new technologies being used are satellite sensors and acoustic measurement instruments
• Carry on laboratory work on captive organisms or models
• Work as part of a team where there are specialists from different branches of oceanography. Oceanographers work in one of the following areas - biological, chemical, physical and in geological oceanography
Biological oceanographers
• Study life under the sea to understand how life develops, interacts, and adapts to its environment. This research is used in fishery sciences and biotechnological pursuits
Chemical oceanographers
• Study concentration of chemicals in the water, their distribution and transfer to the seafloor and finally the effects of pollutants
• Work on projects for treatment of industrial, solid and sewage waste
Physical oceanographers
• Study the influence of waves, tides, current, temperature and salinity
• Collect data from different regions using acoustic techniques and satellite remote sensing
Geological oceanographers
• Study the ocean floor and the sedimentations, the movements of the earth's crust, coastal margins, effects of offshore dredging on beaches, location of mineral resources and thereby decide the site for marine structures such as offshore drilling plants
Marine geologists
• Are concerned with petroleum and mineral deposits and propagation and maintenance of marine life
• They study their relationships to environmental conditions
• Work for long stretches of time on research ships at sea
