Surveyor
Land surveyors use a combination of traditional instruments and digital technology to measure the shape of the land and gather data for civil engineering and construction projects. Projects can range from building roads and tunnels to mining and quarrying.

You will normally need a degree or postgraduate qualification in surveying or a related subject like construction or engineering to get into this career.
Job responsibility:
Your duties could include:
• carrying out initial surveys and environmental impact assessments on potential sites to assess whether construction plans are workable
• using surveying instruments and GPS to chart exact coordinates of site features (geospatial measurement)
• producing digital images of sites (photogrammetry) and mapping land use with satellite photography (remote sensing)
• gathering data and using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyse and interpret site features (geomatics)
• monitoring land movement and subsidence caused during the construction project or by natural processes (geomechanics)
• draughting 2D and 3D charts and maps using computer aided design software and other cartographic techniques.
This is a varied job and you could find yourself working on road, tunnel and bridge building projects, land redevelopment, in mining and quarrying, or on the installation of power and water supply networks.
Employment Opportunities for Surveyor:
Typical employers include central and local government, construction, engineering and property development companies, specialist surveying firms,
financial institutions and Ordnance Survey of Great Britain.
With experience, you could progress to overall project management, contract management, specialise in a particular aspect of surveying, or work as a selfemployed consultant.
How to become Surveyor?
In India land surveyor education is mostly associated with civil engineering discipline. Most of the surveyors, have informal education, through work experience, restricting their growth option. An institute in West Bengal offers Diploma in land surveying, and has very limited seats i.e. 30.
